Corner sofa buying guide
If you're thinking of buying a corner sofa, here's a buying guide to help you choose the right one.
Measure your space
Before shopping for your new corner sofa, measure the area where you plan to put it. Measure the area's width, height, and depth to determine what styles and sizes will fit.Check that there's enough space around the sofa and that it won't overpower the room. A great visual way to do this is to mark out the shape of the sofa with masking tape on the floor.
Also, measure the doorway to ensure that you'll be able to get the sofa in!
Choose your style
Corner sofas come in various sizes and shapes. As well as a standard corner sofa, with arms and backs on both sides, your other options include:
- Chaise corner sofa - an L-shaped sofa with a chaise lounge. These sofas are more compact, so they work well in small spaces.
- Modular corner sofas – a customisable sofa with individual pieces that can be configured to create a corner seating arrangement. Modular sofas are good when you have a large space to fill.
- Curved corner sofa – a U-shaped sofa. These sofas work well as a centrepiece and are more sociable than a standard corner sofa.
Several furniture brands, including G Plan, Himolla and Stressless, offer recliner corner sofas for that extra level of comfort.
Decide on the upholstery
You'll be spoilt for choice with the upholstery of your corner sofa. Your options include:
- Fabric - soft and cosy, fabric sofas come in many colours and textures. Choose durable, stain-resistant fabrics if you have pets or kids.
- Leather - stylish, durable and easy to clean, leather adds a sophisticated look. However, it can be more expensive than fabric and requires regular care.
- Velvet - luxurious and chic, velvet sofas make a statement but can be hard to maintain.
When deciding on the upholstery, consider how it will complement your room's overall aesthetic and fit with your family circumstances.
Left-hand or right-hand facing?
Corner sofas are either left-hand facing or right-hand facing:
- Left-hand facing - the longer part of the sofa is on your left when facing the front.
- Right-hand facing - the longer part is on your right when facing the front.
When choosing between the two, consider the layout of your room and how the sofa will fit best with the flow of the space.
A corner sofa can transform your living space by providing plenty of cosy seating. If you take the time to consider all the essential factors, such as size, configuration, and material, you can find the perfect sofa to suit your lifestyle and home design.
